Pierre Balmain founded his own haute couture atelier in 1945 and presented his first collection that same year, which was well received by critics and buyers alike. Style icons like Brigitte Bardot quickly became part of his select clientele. Balmain also designed film costumes and uniforms, for example for airlines or the French police.
Since 2012, Olivier Rousteing has been the creative director of the traditional house. His designs combine glamour and opulence: extremely figure-hugging dresses, elaborate, sparkling appliqués and skintight skinny jeans are now among the luxury label's trademarks.
